On-Demand Course Overview
The Five Pillars
The ‘Becoming a True Athlete’ course is designed around TAP's 5 pillars for holistic athlete development:
In this course, you will be guided through each pillar in turn, with the mindfulness content being threaded through it all. |
Performance - This pillar focuses on the three controllables: Preparation, Effort and Attitude. You will be led to describe your very best effort and attitude, and then will be introduced to a system that allows you to skilfully draw your focus to what matters most in the moment of performance - the action at hand. This process allows you to get closer to these ideal descriptions more consistently, and has the added benefit of reducing performance anxiety, as you realise that the things that matter most are fully within your sphere of control.
Identity & Values - This is about helping you discover what it is that you most value about sport, and about yourself when you are doing your sport. This pillar is also designed to help you discover who you are as a person and as an athlete. Knowing your values can help with motivation, as you begin to do things because of who you truly are, and not just because it’s what you’ve been told you should do. It can also provide you with a powerful foundation of wellbeing and fulfillment, as you begin to live in closer alignment to the way you most want to be.

Mindfulness - Mindfulness embodies The True Athlete Project for its ability to nurture wellbeing, cultivate compassionate relationships, and improve athletic performance, all stemming from the same simple practice. The course provides a full introduction to mindfulness for athletes and resources that are designed to help you sustain your practice.
Community Responsibility - The True Athlete Project has, at its heart, the idea that sport must make a positive impact in the world, and that there is much work to do to harness its full power. Therefore, we have dedicated a pillar to raising awareness about key issues around the Sport for Social Change movement and to encourage our course participants to see themselves as pivotal actors in this process, both as athletes in their sporting communities and as citizens of their society.
Nature and Connectedness - Young people are spending ever decreasing amounts of time outdoors and in nature. The term Nature Deficit Disorder was coined to highlight the significant detrimental effects that this behaviour creates.
There is something deeply rooted in what it is to be human that we lose contact with when we spend too much time attached to our screens, and this can have a profound impact on our perspective on the world, and therefore our well-being.
